Proscillaridin (talusin) is a pure crystalline glycoside obtained from the white squill (Urginea maritinia linne). It has been identified as the 3β-rhamnosido-14β-hydroxybufa-4,20,22-trienolide.·Its chemical structure is shown in Fig. 1. The drug is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, thus permitting rapid oral action. It has been used extensively in Europe, and its reported main advantage is its relatively rapid speed of dissipation. This should minimize toxicity associated with inadvertent overdosage. A rapidly dissipated cardiac glycoside, effective orally, and similar in its cardiotonic effects to available glycosides would indeed be welcome. This study will show that proscillaridin is an effective cardiotonic agent both orally and intravenously, that it is rapidly dissipated, and that its toxicity is similar to that of commonly used glycosides
