Canadian Journal of Chemistry 70 (1992) 2664-2676
The specific capsular polysaccharide produced by Rhodococcus equi serotype 3 was found to be a high-molecularweight acidic polymer composed of D-glucose, D-galactose, D-glucuronic acid, 4-O-[(S)-1-carboxyethyll-D-mannose, and pyruvic acid in equal molar proportions. Structural analysis, employing a combination of chemical and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques, established that the polysaccharide is composed of linear repeating tetrasaccharide units [structure], in which (R)-1-carboxyethylidene groups bridge the O-2 and O-3 positions of the β-D-glucuronic acid residues. The 1H and 13C NMR resonances of the native and depyruvulated serotype 3 polysaccharides were fully assigned by homo- and heteronuclear chemical shift correlation methods. The absolute configurations of the lactate-substituted mannopyranosyl residues and the pyruvate acetals were determined from 1H-1H NOE measurements on the intact polysaccharide. Unequivocal determination of the absolute chirality of the 4-O-[(S)-1-carboxyethyll-β-D-mannopyranoseresidues was achieved by 1H-1H NOE measurements on an acetylated lactone derivative of the glycose.

Carbohydrate Research 278(1) (1995) 143-153
The structure of Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens strain 49 capsular polysaccharide has been investigated mainly by sugar and methylation analysis, partial chemical degradations, NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. The results suggest that the polysaccharide is composed of pentasaccharide repeating units having the following structure. [formula: see text] The polysaccharide contains O-acetyl groups, one of which is substituted to O-3 of the 4-substituted α-D-Galp residue, while others occur in non-stoichiometric amounts at other locations

Knirel YA, Van Calsteren M "Bacterial exopolysaccharides" -
Book: Comprehensive Glycoscience: From Chemistry to Systems Biology. Reference Module in Chemistry, Molecular Sciences and Chemical Engineering (2021) 1-75
Bacterial extracellular polysaccharides are known as a cell-bound capsule, a sheath, or a slime, which is excreted into the environment. They play an important role in virulence of medical bacteria and plant-to-symbiont interaction and are used for serotyping of bacteria and production of vaccines. Some exopolysaccharides have commercial applications in industry, and claims of health benefits have been documented for an increasing number of them. Exopolysaccharides have diverse composition and structure, and some contain sugar and non-sugar components that are found in bacterial carbohydrates only. The present article provides an updated collection of the data on exopolysaccharides of various classes of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria reported until the end of 2019. When known, biosynthesis pathways of exopolysaccharides are treated in a summary manner. References are made to structure and biosynthesis relatedness between exopolysaccharides of different bacterial taxa as well as between bacterial polysaccharides and mammalian glycosaminoglycans.

Vinogradov E, Peppler MS, Perry MB "The structure of the nonreducing terminal groups in the O-specific polysaccharides from two strains of Bordetella bronchiseptica" -
European Journal of Biochemistry 267(24) (2000) 7230-7236
The structures of the polysaccharide chains of the LPS from Bordetella bronchiseptica strains 110H and Bp512 were analysed by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The polysaccharides consist of α-(1-4)-linked 2,3-diacetamido-2,3-dideoxy-L-galacturonic acid repeating units. Polysaccharides from both strains have 2,3,4-triamino-2,3,4-trideoxy-α-galacturonamide derivatives at their nonreducing ends, a monosaccharide identified for the first time in nature. The polymers from the two strains differ in the nature of the acylation of the amino groups of this monosaccharide. In the strain 110H, the residue is formylated at positions 3 and 4, and has N-formyl-L-alanyl or L-alanyl substituents at N-2. In the strain Bp512, the amino group at position 2 is acetylated, at position 3 it is formylated, and the amino group at position 4 bears a 2-methoxypropionyl substituent. The distribution of the acyl groups was determined from long range 1H-13C correlation (HMBC) NMR spectra. Measurement of the spectra under different pH conditions showed that carboxyl groups of the inner uronic acid residues of the polymeric chain are free, and that carboxyl groups of the terminal residues are amidated. These conclusions were confirmed by the results of mass spectrometric analysis.

The results demonstrate that the polysaccharide consists of hexasaccharide repeating units with the following structure: . The extracellular polysaccharide produced by Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens strain H10b, when grown under strictly anaerobic conditions with glucose as carbohydrate source, has been studied by chemical and spectroscopic techniques. The results demonstrate that the polysaccharide consists of hexasaccharide repeating units with the following structure: . The isolated polysaccharide was found to be ~65% acetylated at O-2 of the 3-O-[(S)-1-carboxyethyl]-b-D-Glcp residue. The absolute configuration of the 1-carboxyethyl groups was determined by circular dichroism.

Carbohydrate Research 307(1-2) (1998) 113-124
The exocellular polysaccharide produced by the cyanobacterium Cyanospira capsulata has been subjected to partial acid hydrolysis and N-deacetylation-nitrous acid deamination. The oligosaccharides released have been isolated by weak anion exchange and aqueous size exclusion chromatography, and characterized by a combination of 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, sugar composition and linkage analyses. The polysaccharide has an octasaccharide repeating unit with the following structure: [formula: see text]
