The investigation of lipid A revealed no substantial structural modifications when compared with lipids A of other C. burnetii isolates despite the long-term survival of the microorganism in the host. The lipid A proximal region of the LPS Cr is more complex in chemical composition than that of the LPS II despite the fact that chromosomal deletions in the RSA 514 isolate were larger, extending on both ends beyond the RSA 439 isolate deletion junctions. The reason for this discrepancy is unknown at present
