A polysaccharide containing L-arabinose, D-mannose, D-galactose, and D-glucuronic acid residues in the molar ratio of 46.9:26.0: 3.9:23.2 was isolated from the extracellular polysaccharides of suspension-cultured tobacco cells by ion-exchange chromatography and barium hydroxide precipitation. Structural studies were performed by methylation analysis, 13C-NMR spectroscopy, partial hydrolysis with acid, and carboxyl-reduction. From those experiments, a structure for the polysaccharide is proposed.

The structures of graecunin-G and graecunin-E have been shown to be (diosgenin) 3-O-α-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)-α-D-glucopyranoside and (diosgenin) 3-O-α-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)-α-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)-α-D-glucopyranoside, respectively.
