Methanol extraction, normal and reversed phase silica gel column chromatography and various spectral analysis were used to isolate and determine the structures of the triterpenoid saponins. Four triterpenoid saponins were identified as: 3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl(1→2)-α-L-arabinopyranosyl oleanolic acid 28-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1→4)-β-D-glucopyranosyl (1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (1), 3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl (1→3)-α-L-arabinopyranosyl oleanolic acid 28-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1→4)-β-D-glucopyranosyl (1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), 23-O-methyl malonyl hederagenin 28-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1→4)-β-D-glucopyranosyl (1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (3) and 3-O-methyl malonyl hederagenin 28-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1→4)-β-D-glucopyranosyl (1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (4). Compounds 2, 3 and 4 are new compounds and named as begoniifolides A, B and C, respectively.
