Methylation, periodate oxidation, and partial hydrolysis studies on the capsular polysaccharide, and on the carboxyl reduced polymer, of Klebsiella K20 show the structure to consist of a repeating unit [structure: see text]. The anomeric linkages were determined by p.m.r. spectroscopy of the carboxyl reduced polysaccharide, and periodate degraded polysaccharides. The p.m.r. spectroscopy of the original polysaccharide also showed the presence in the polysaccharide of one O-acetyl group per eight sugar residues.
