  Two triterpene saponins have been isolated from the inflorescences of Verbascum nigrum. Their structures were determined by chemical and spectral methods as 3-O-([α-L-rhamnosyl-(1→4)-(β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)]-be ta-D-glucopyranosyl]-(1→2)-β-fucopyranosyl)-13β,28-epoxyolean-11-ene-3β,23-diol and 3-O-([α-L-rhamnosyl-(1→4)-(β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)-β-D- glucopyranosyl]-(1→2)-β-fucopyranosyl)-11-methoxy-olean-12-en e-3β,23,28-triol.

  The structure of verbascosaponin was revised. Using 2D‐NMR techniques (COSY, TOCSY, NOESY, ROESY, HMQC, DEPT‐COSY, HMQC‐TOCSY and HMBC) and selective excitation, we established the structure of 1 as 3β‐O‐{α‐L‐rhamnopyranosyl‐(1→4)‐β‐D‐glucopyranosyl‐(1→3)‐[β‐D‐glucopyranosyl‐(1→2)‐]‐β‐D‐fucopyranosyl}‐13β,28‐epoxyolea‐11‐en‐23α‐ol. A second saponin 2 was isolated from the officinal drug Flores Verbasci and its structure determined as 11‐methoxy‐3β‐O‐{α‐L‐rhamnopyranosyl‐(1→4)‐β‐D‐glucopyranosyl‐(1→3)‐[β‐D‐glucopyranosyl‐(1→2)‐β‐D‐fucopyranosyl]olea‐12‐en‐23α,28β‐diol.
