Five spirostanol saponins were isolated from the bulbs of Allium aflatunense. One of them, (25R)-5α-spirostane-2α,3β-diol (gitogenin) 3-O-{O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-galactopyranoside} was isolated from a plant source for the first time and two of them were new compounds. The spectral and chemical data showed that the structures of the new saponins were (25R)-5α-spirostane-2α,3β,5-triol 2-O-β-D-glucopyranoside and gitogenin 3-O-{O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-O-[4-O-[(S)-3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl]-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→3)]-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-galactopyranoside}. The isolated saponins were evaluated for their cytostatic activity on human promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 cells.
