  OBJECTIVE: To study the chemical constituents in Aquilegia oxysepala. METHOD: Various chromatographic techniques were used to separate and purify the constituents. The structures were determined by spectral analysis and chemical evidence. RESULT: Five flavonoids were isolated from the plant and identified as genkwanin, apigenin, luteonlin, swertisin and tilianin. CONCLUSION: All these compounds were isolated from the plant for the first time.

  Eight flavonoid compounds were isolated from the seeds of Ziziphus jujuba Mill var. Spinosa. On the basis of chemical and spectral analyses their structures were elucidated as swertish (1), puerarin (2), 6‴-feruloylspinosin (3), apigenin-6-C-β-D-glucopyranoside (4), spinosin (5), 6‴-feruloylisospinosin (6), isospinosin (7), and isovitexin-2″-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (8). Flavonoids 6 and 7 are novel compounds. Rotamers exist for compounds 1, 3 and 5, which are reported for the first time. Compounds 2, 4 and 8 were isolated from this plant for the first time. Spinosin and swertish possess significant sedative activity.

  Negative ion mass spectra of underivatized flavonoid O- and C-glycosides were recorded using desorption chemical ionization (DCI) at a low reagent gas pressure. Advantages and limitations of the method for the characterization of the mono-, di- and triglycosides are discussed. For all O-glycosides investigated, the aglycone moieties are found to be base anions. The molecular masses of the glycosides are indicated by the presence of [M]−. ions with fairly high abundances for monoglycosides, lower abundances for diglycosides and a very low intensity for triglycosides. In addition to the sugar moiety losses, anions which resulted from the stepwise elimination of water from the sugar moiety were also observed at m/z 290 or 306 in 1 → 6 linked bioses, m/z 127, 145 and 163 in deoxyhexose as well as m/z 161 and 143 in hexose. Those ions except ions due to the molecule and the retro-Diels–Alder cleavage of the aglycone moiety could not be found in electron ionization mass spectra. Consequently, information concerning the structure of the aglycone moiety could be obtained using the EI technique and of sugar moiety using the negative ion DCI technique; also the combined positive and negative ion was shown to be a good approach for the structural characterization of flavonoid glycosides.

  Four diploid and seven allopolyploid bearded Iris were surveyed for their leaf flavonoid, isoflavonoid and xanthone constituents in order to investigate their phylogeny. Eighteen flavone Cglycosides and eight C-glucoxanthones were identified and proved to be useful evolutionary markers. The phenolic data showed that Iris pseudopumila was a strong candidate as a diploid parent of some allopolyploid taxa e.g. I. marsica and I. lutescens but rules out the participation of I. pallida. Amongst the 2n = 44 allopolyploids the results suggested that I. germanica and I. albicans are very closely related and that they have evolved from the 2n = 40 taxa e.g. I. bicapitata.

  Impatiens textori Miquel (Balsaminaceae) is an annual plant growing in most parts of Korea. The herb of this plant has been used for the external application of snake poison and the bruise. Previous investigations conducted with the herbs have demonstrated it to contain three flavones and three flavone glycosides. Continuing to previous reports, quercetin, kaempferol and acacetin 7-O-β-D-glucoside were isolated from the herbs of this plant.

  From the leaves of Phlomis aurea, two new iridoids of unique structures named 3-epiphlomurin (1) and phlomurin (2), a new megastigmane glucoside phlomuroside (3) and a new benzyl alcohol glycoside having the structure benzyl alcohol-O-β-xylopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-glucopyranoside (4) have been isolated together with four known iridoids auroside, lamiide, 8-epiloganin and ipolamiide, two known phenolic glycosides acteoside (verbascoside) and syringin, one known phenylethanoid glycoside 2-phenylethyl-O-β-xylopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-glucopyranoside, one known lignan liriodendrin and three known flavonoids chrysoeriol-7-O-β-glucopyranoside, acacetin-7-O-β-glucopyranoside and luteolin-7-O-β-glucopyranoside. The structures of the isolated compounds were verified by means of mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectral analyses.
