The defatted fruit-body of G. frondosa was successively extracted with water and 10% aqueous zinc chloride in an autoclave. The polysaccharide (F4) extracted with the zinc chloride solution had [α]D +7.9° (c 0.3, 4% sodium hydroxide) and was composed of β-D-glucose. From the results of methylation study, Smith degradation, and enzymic hydrolysis, it was concluded that F4 is a polysaccharide composed of a backbone of β-(1→3)-linked d-glucopyranosyl residues, and possessed of a single β-D-glucopyranosyl group joined through O-6 of every third d-glucopyranosyl residue of the backbone. The molecular weight was determined by gel filtration to be 140,000.
