The structure of the core oligosaccharide of Aeromonas hydrophila (Chemotype II) lipopolysaccharide has been investigated. The studies involved the use of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, methylation analysis, partial hydrolysis with acid, periodate oxidation, Smith degradation, nitrous acid deamination, and oxidation with chromium trioxide. As a result of these studies the following structure is proposed (abbreviation: a-LD-Hep = L-glycero-a-D-manno-heptose).
